The students from the CS/IT departments are quite satisfied with the faculty at Northern India Engineering College (NIEC) and say that senior and experienced professors teach the core subjects whereas junior professors are allotted only the basic subjects. Students from other departments have a different opinion; they say that majority of their faculty comprise BTech passouts who aspire gain some teaching experience and pursue higher studies alongwith. “I would rate them at a petty two on ten” says a very disappointed student.

The campus of NIEC -Delhi is moderately big with a lush green lawn and a great looking building occupying most of the area. The insides of the building however, fail to maintain the excellent impression that the first look of the college creates. Well maintained classrooms and the library are perhaps the only good things worth mentioning. “The labs are too small to work in and they don’t have the necessary apparatus many-a-times” says a student. “The biggest lab is perhaps the Chem-lab which isn’t even used after the first year” says another. The basement is said to be waterlogged during the rains, there’s no Wi-Fi connectivity and the only access to internet is a small computer lab which has its own restrictions for use. A lack of a hostel is another thing the students from outside Delhi complain about.

The placements in the previous two years have produced contradictory results. In the year before placements were good to excellent with almost 80-90% placements. However, this year the records have been relatively lower. Companies visiting NIEC - Delhi include Infosys (major recruiter), Persistent and Birlasoft, but apart from these usual companies which recruit engineers from every other college, there’s no dream jobs on offer here. Average salaries range between 3 to 4 lakhs a year with the highest reaching up to 4.7 lakh.

Northern India Engineering College (NIEC) is situated in a slightly remote location which can be said to be moderately accessible. It’s closest from Shastri Park Metro station on the Red Line and a 10 minute rickshaw ride should take you there. Certainly better than many other “upcoming” institutes.

The canteen has the exact dimensions of a DTC bus (perhaps it’s even smaller) but it’s definitely more dirtier. The food is cheap but tastes awfully bad and the students are unable to suggest one good thing to an outsider. There's a nescafe as well which comes across as a pleasant relief.

There’s no place to be at in the vicinity of the college since it’s located off the highway and students need to travel real far to get to places like Kamla Nagar, Delhi University North Campus or Connaught Place for which a vehicle is an absolute necessity.

99% of the crowd at NIEC is from Delhi (Delhi-ites is what they prefer to be called) with a variable boys to girl ratio ranging from a healthy 50:50 in the CS/IT department to just 3 girls in the Mechanical department. Overall the crowd is decent and doesn’t seem to get involved in too many fights or tussles. A slight trend of showing off material possessions exists amongst the students at this college; after all it’s the “Delhi-ites” who form the major chunk of the college.

An inter-college technical festival called “F-Nord” is celebrated sometime in mid-March. Technophilia, a seminar organized by one of the committees in the college is one of the many other college level events being organised by the different clubs.

Northern India Engineering College (NIEC) is quite relaxed when it comes to attendance; atleast in the last two years wherein students with as low as 20% attendance are let off with a few warnings. For the first two years a little more discipline is maintained and students with attendance below 60% (well-below the IP University norm of 75%) are made to write extra assignments or let off with little hassle.

Northern India Engineering College (NIEC) is one of the renowned colleges in Delhi’s IP University but fails to deliver the expectations its created for the students. Although various issues happen to mar the college’s reputation, it manages to place almost all its students (though not into the BIG companies). So a little improvement on the faculty side and a little on the placements should be enough for it to keep enjoying the 6th or 7th preference amongst the students.
