Unlike other government colleges, VGEC is way better in all regards. Faculty is available for all the subjects, and lectures are conducted regularly. Senior faculties are good teachers, and the college makes it a point to keep a check on the ones who are not so good. So in general the ECE department is considered to be the best when it comes to faculties.

The moment you enter the campus, you see a grand campus and grey stone buildings and designed in a unique style of its own. The campus is planned or laid out very well, and the green lawns make the visual appeal much more pleasant. The campus is planned in a circular area, with about 12 individual buildings inside the circular plan. The edges and the entire feel of the buildings is pretty soft, and the kinds that encourages learning. VGEC comprises of 9 blocks housing the admin, lecture halls, and the labs. 2 hostel blocks for both guys and the girls. Every block houses the lectures halls, and the corresponding laboratories of the particular departments. The blocks have a quad in the middle and a circular corridor. The area under IITG would be back with VGEC. The classes are spacious and comfortable. Labs are equipped and students say it’s enriched with resources, and all very well maintained. The D-block basement is the Library and is pretty resourceful. Textbooks and other reference books are easily available, with sufficient number of copies of every book. Internet access is available at the library, and the labs. VGEC does not have Wi-Fi setup, but IITG does, so at times, students can use it there.

Campus placements here are good, but you need to maintain a fairly decent CPI by the time of campus placements. Maintain about a 7 pointer, and you should be eligible for most of the companies coming on the campus. Out of those who are eligible, what remains is clearing the tests conducted by the companies, which depends on an individual student. The college does its best in getting the companies to the campus. Some big names include TCS, iGate-Patni, L&T, Torrent Power, Hitachi, Dexter, Ford and Desma. Students also get core jobs, which is not the case in many of the colleges. Out of the entire batch about 30-35% students get jobs on campus, while others try outside or have other plans on mind.

Chandkheda is almost mid-way from the main cities of Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar. On the north end of the city, very close to the S.P.Ring Road and meets it at the Tapovan Circle. The Indian Institute of Technology, Gandhinagar, also has a transit campus currently in this campus. Even otherwise Government Engineering College is a landmark in itself. About 15Km from Gandhinagar and about 3kms from the Ring Road junction, reaching here is no issue at all. State Transport buses from Gandhinagar and AMTS buses from Ahmedabad ply to the college at regular intervals. About a 40% of students get to the college on their own vehicles. And do not be surprised if we tell you that a BRTS route to the college should be ready before the next batch comes in, so getting here would be much easier.

The college provides hostel for both boys, and girls, and the charges are a meagre 1,500 Rupees for a semester and 4 people share a room. Rooms are decent sized, and kept clean and neat by the hard working house-keeping staff. But as with all hostel, untidy room remain a romantic choice for most. Indoor sports, football, basketball facilities are normal and hostelites make maximum use of it. Badminton court in one of the college blocks is pretty cool. The college is supportive about students being involved in sports.

VGEC has 2 canteens; one is in the college block and the other is in the hostel block. The one in the college is whatever, while the one at the hostel is more popular. The one at the hostel is open just for the college staff and hostelites. Meals (Guajarati Thalis) are available at the canteens and are acceptable. For more variety there are many options right outside the college campus from road side vendors to restaurants and franchisee pizza parlours, U.S Pizza, Pizza Planet, Havmor Ice-cream and more.

That gets us to the hangout areas around. Apart from these food places around the college, there are malls students go to; Balaji Agora Mall and Sangath mall are close by. Motera stadium is also popular and students flock there regularly. Apart from that, Mother Dairy near Indira Bridge is also a famous foodie destination.

Most of the students hail from Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar itself, so locals make up for about 80% of the class, while the rest are from different parts of the state. Students are generally not nerdy all round the year, but as the exams come close, the college astonishingly transforms into a pool of nerds who do not fail to take the exams sincerely. Students help each other to prepare for the exams, but there isn’t any trend of seniors passing on notes/materials to their juniors yet. Ratio of boys to girls is about 30:70, which is normal for an engineering college. The crowd is decent, people mix well and the interaction between students is good. But most of the times, after the college people immediately head home, as most stay far, and reaching home could get late.

‘Techno-aspire’ the annual techfest, which mainly involves robotics events, is held in the month of February. Days are celebrated based on themes, and are generally spread throughout the year. The college doesn’t celebrate a full-fledged cultural festival.

Things are pretty relaxed here, and in spite of the university norm, students need to maintain about 50% attendance, the rest would be managed. Only in a worst case scenario would a student be detained, for having a disgraceful attendance. But in general the routine is not so strict, and chilling or hanging around in the campus is absolutely fine, and no one would ever annoy you to get back to the classes. But there again, missing lectures is generally not advisable, and students are mature enough to be responsible and attend regularly.

Being a government college is no deterrent to the management of VGEC, and things and operations are pretty good here. The campus is sprawling, and the facilities all first-class, and the environment peaceful and serene. There are virtually no attendance issues, but the teaching is not affected by that. Practical exposure is provided, and seniors and faculties are approachable. A GATE club run by students helps those who wish to pursue masters. Overall a good choice for most, and the fees if you consider are almost negligible.
