Vydehi Institute of Medical Sciences & Research Centre, White Field

Vydehi Institute of Medical Sciences (VIMS) is located at the extreme end of far-eastern Bangalore in an area called White Field, a hub of many IT companies as well as home to many luxurious and high-end properties. Two BMTC buses namely 335E from Majestic bus stand and 500C from Banashankari bus stand are the only way to reach the college using public transport. Expect at least an hour’s journey if you are coming from any part of the city except may be eastern Bangalore.

The campus is humungous and hosts numerous blocks such as Vydehi Institute of Dental Sciences, Vydehi Institute of Nursing Science, Vydehi Institute of Oncology along with Vydehi Institute of Medical  Sciences (VIMS) and Vydehi Hospital. The first appearance of the infrastructure makes it feel like a palace of some sorts owned by one of those rich Sultans in the Gulf. Academically too students were all praise for the infra; except for Wi-Fi, the institute has almost all the needs fulfilled.

The same, however, cannot be said about the hostels which have cleanliness issues, water problems and to add to all woes “tasteless food”

For Karnataka CET students: Rs. 63,000/- per year
For UGET (COMEDK) students: Rs. 3.25L per year

Students are of the opinion that practicals and clinical sessions are pretty interesting and an amazing learning experience compared to the boring theory lectures. However, they are quite satisfied with the teaching and hold no complaints against the faculty. “Except of course, Pathology and Community Medicine which are horrible” comments a student.

Attendance & Discipline:

Vydehi Institute of Medical Sciences (VIMS) is VERY particular about the attendance issue and even more about discipline. Every student is required to attend at least 75% in each subject and a maximum of 5% relaxation is allowed if he/she has an outstanding academic record. Below that and no one can save you from getting a year back. “Even if you bunk a single lecture, they have a system in place wherein a SMS is sent to your parents” says an irritated student.

Dress codes are mandatory; formals for guys and salwaar kameez for girls. Girls and guys have to sit in separate rows in class, they aren’t supposed to walk or talk even outside class while in the campus. Mobile phones are confiscated if found being used (or even otherwise if there happens to be a surprise check).

Friendly, approachable, co-operative and enthusiastic but petrified all the time. “Even the guards we need to watch out for” says one.

Vydehi Institute of Medical Sciences (VIMS) hosts two kinds of canteens inside the campus; one is the big spacious college canteen and another equally big one which students call “The Restaurant”. Both of them serve decent food at reasonable rates.

IT companies, Forum Mall, more IT companies, Phoenix City Mall, few more IT companies... yeah that’s pretty much. But who gets to bunk and hang-out at VIMS anyway!

Hospitals Affiliated:

Students are usually posted only in the parent hospital which gets a fair amount of patient inflow but students feel that there should be more exposure. A handful of them are also posted in Mallya hospital and they claim to get enough practical learning there.

Vydehi Institute of Medical Sciences (VIMS), while not the best among the rest, is definitely a good take for those who couldn’t manage a seat elsewhere. However, be ready to have a hard time here as far as discipline is concerned.
