Krishnadevaraya College of Dental Sciences & Hospital (KCDS & H), Yelahanka
Krishnadevaraya College of Dental Sciences (KCDS) is located about 1km off the Bangalore International Airport Road in Yelahanka, a distant suburb in North Bangalore. Although it’s far from the city centre, it isn’t completely inaccessible as BMTC buses drop you within walking distance of the college. Bus facility is also provided by the college at an additional Rs. 11,000/- per year.
You are sure to be overwhelmed by the sheer magnificence of the campus; it’s colossal. Apart from the Dental College, there’s a MBA department and an Engineering college (MVIT) as well. The college is pretty old and the infrastructure isn’t all that great. Students claim that although they don’t face any major issues, the infra could have been better.
There are two hostels at Sir M Visveswaraya Institute of Technology (MVIT) campus which are common to all dental college as well as the engineering college. The old hostel charges Rs. 25-30,000 per year and the new one Rs. 60,000/- per year. Obviously the new one is better, but the old hostel is decent too.
For Karnataka CET students: Rs. 40,000/- per year
For UGET (COMEDK) students: Rs. 2.25L per year
Students claims that faculty is not very pleasing; they are said to hold personal grudges against those who fall into their bad books and tend to be less supportive during oral exams and in internal assessments. Except for a few good teachers, most others are pretty laid back and although knowledgeable, they are not good teachers. Some don’t have that enthusiasm to teach, while some others are not able to express their knowledge to the fullest. “We have to rely on learning from the mistakes we make in our practical sessions” says an unsatisfied student.
Attendance & Discipline:
Krishnadevaraya College of Dental Sciences (KCDS) is quite stubborn about attendance issues. 75% is mandatory and everyone complies with it. Some of those who don’t can manage by buttering the office staff.
Krishnadevaraya College of Dental Sciences (KCDS) distant location doesn’t stop any of them from coming right from central Bangalore or even South Bangalore; at least half of the people here are from proper Bangalore. A lot of them come from North India too. All in all a very intermingling and friendly crowd, some nerdy types as well, and you can expect to have fun all four years.
There’s one common canteen at the MVIT campus which is sufficiently large and comfortably accommodates a large number of students without causing much congestion. It’s divided into 3-4 parts; one for the faculty, one with only standees, one with some chairs and tables and so on. The sitting area is a little less and only lucky ones get to eat lunch there. Food is a little inconsistent they say, what tastes the best today, might be the worst the next day. Juices & Milkshakes at the canteen are worth trying.
There was a tiny smoking joint close to Krishnadevara College of Dental Science (KCDS) which everyone called the “HUT”, but it has shut now. All that’s around the college now is vast stretches of barren land.
“Kalanjal” counts as the biggest celebrations event at Sir M Visveswaraya Institute of Technology (MVIT) campus. It happens in October but is organized and participated in by engineering students. Krishnadevaraya College of Dental Sciences (KCDS) doesn’t have separate festival of its own. Extra curriculars in general are discouraged at this college.
The remote location of the hospital and the college campus make it advantageous as it’s the only hospital to serve numerous villages splattered around this area. The number of patients coming in is enough to give practical exposure to the students. The college is also attached to the 100- bedded Government General Hospital, Yelahanka, which is within a distance of 7 kms from the college, for additional clinical training of the students on OT facilities for the oral & maxillofacial surgeries.

Practical exposure in the Dental hospital is the best part of Krishnadevaraya College of Dental Sciences (KCDS). Other than that, there are a lot of shortcomings which you need to get used to.
